Tom Rat Cage Review

tom rat cage Another rat cage review for our UK visitors. The Tom Rat Cage has many of the good features of the Jenny, but with much easier access for cleaning out your fuzzy friends. The door is nice and large and the wires are close together, so even your baby rats won’t escape. This cage is available from Zooplus and you get a discount on your first order.

It may be a good idea to replace the water bottle that comes with the cage, as some have said it is poor quality, but other than that this is a great cage. The tunnels make things interesting for your ratty friends and there is still plenty of room to add a comfy hammock and other rat toys.

All in all this is a good cage, especially for the price, but could be better quality.

You can get a discount off your first order below.

Is this the best value cage you could find? Surely there is an online supplier with a product less than £100 suitable for rats. Just linking to cages that cost more than most people can afford is ridiculous. We’d all love a huge cage but we havent all got the money to splash on a £10 pet

    Hi Matt,

Thanks for your comment. Sure there are cheaper cages available. They are not hard to find and you can pick up a cheap cage in a pet store. Pet rats may cost $10 to adopt, but that is not their worth. They are worth much more than that to people who love their pets.

Pet rats are active and intelligent and love to have a large environment to explore. Even if you have a huge cage, you still need to let them out every day. I started off with a smaller cage and saved up until I could afford the huge one they have now. If you choose to have pets you have to make sure they are a priority.

Anyone who decides to adopt pet rats shouldn’t just consider the initial cost of the rats and the cage, but also the possibility of vets bills. Rats are very prone to respiratory diseases and tumors, so it is important to be able to pay for treatment if necessary. If you cannot afford these things then you really shouldn’t have any pets.

I think one of the best parts of pet rats (any pet for that matter) is the creativity and ingenuity they can inspire you to.

When you’re shopping for a habitat one of the best things to do is look at the size dimensions and read the reviews. When you find a size (and number of levels) that most people are calling perfect or close to, your job just becomes to find something comparable and affordable.

While a hundred bucks isn’t a bad base price at all for a brand new, warranteed house for a rat, it’s entirely possible to find a used bird cage of comparable size at a flea market for a lot less money. (Carry a Gerber with you, they have rulers on the sides. Make sure the bars are an 1/8th inch or less apart and won’t bend under easy pressure. The doors should snap or lock shut; rats will learn how to open sliders.) Then all you need is a little creativity (and access to a wood shop) to make some levels and modifications.

Rats aren’t picky, but they do need a lot of space to be healthy and happy. And they don’t make good pets when they aren’t healthy and happy, they’re more like prisoners then. So take your time, and keep your eyes peeled. There’s always something out there just waiting to be repurposed into a rat mansion.

(Cats are picky. I made a cat tree out of an old ladder once. Three stories, nice felt padded beds, and sisal wrapped steps, but my cat looked at me like I was the stupidest thing on earth when I set it in front of the window. Picky cats.)

I think the bigger the cage the better and it sounds like you have a great one Courtney. Thanks for the tip x

I have a rat cage that is a good size with plenty of space for my two rats, Ella and Lulu, to run about and play together.
