Here is an easy way to make sure you are doing everything you can to keep your ratty happy.
Before you get your rat
- Are you allowed to keep a rat? Do you need to check with your parents, partner or landlord? Get permission
- Have you got a large rat cage ready for your new friends? Make sure it is big enough to let your rat run, climb and hide away when you aren’t there to let him out.
- Buy the bedding and put it in the cage. Use old newspaper to line the floor of the cage and then put the bedding on top.
- Have you rat proofed your house?
Daily
- Clean out the droppings from your ratties cage
- Remove any uneaten food from the last meal, also check for any food your rat has hoarded away and remove it before it goes mouldy.
- Check whether your rat has enough water, top it up.
- Feed you rats.
- Spend time playing with your rats. Play games with them, tickle them, train them and love them.
- Health Checks
Weekly
- Clean out the rat cage thoroughly and disinfect.
- Replace your ratties bedding, make it cosy.
- Wash the water bottle and give your rat fresh water.
- Check if your rats have gnawed through any parts of their cage and fix it up.
- Replace any toys or branches that your rat has chewed up
- Put in some new and interesting toys.
Occasionally
- Check your rat’s teeth and claws to see whether they have grown too long.
- Also regularily check your rat all over for any health problems.
