Hello Abi,

It sounds like Perky may have a mammary tumour. Female rats can be very prone to these. They are often benign, but they can grow quite quickly and make it harder for your rat to move around. Your vet should be able to remove the lump, although be aware that they can grow back.

Most rats cope very well with their lumps, but of course it is a good idea to get the vet to check her as well.

Good Luck x

I am not sure how well it worked, but I can say this, her sister died from respiratory infection, and while she had that we gave her as big a dose as we thought was needed (a full capsule a day as it is none toxic) and she didn't get respiratory infection, but she did try to play with her sister allot, nowadays she gets mild colds but no respiratory infections thus far. So I think it worked quite well, we also gave it to our sick rat in hopes that it may cure her, that didn't help, she looked like she would start to get better, and then she would just get worse, it did prolong it from killing her though (she lived a whole 3 weeks after I noticed the symptoms) when she was starting to really look bad I gave her a high powered pain killer to ease the pain as she died, it was sad as always ;(

Hi Winnie,

That is great that you are boycotting Mars. Animal testing is outdated and horrificly cruel and I don't think we should stand by and let it happen. Well done x

Hi Winnie,

Thank you for your comment. I haven't heard of taking rats in for pet therapy, but I am sure if you have a friendly and calm rat you could ask the hospital about it. Your main problem would be people's pre conceived ideas about rats, which may stop you from bringing him in to see people.

Let me know how it goes x

Hello Krystal,

It sounds like you have already done some research, but the best idea is to take your little one to the vet. A small animal specialist is best and they will be able to advise you how to control the seizures and ensure your rat's quality of life.

Good luck and let us know how it goes x

I noe know so many things about rats! I was wondering if you know if you can bring rats to hospitals like some people will bring their dogs and visit patients? If you know great! But it's ok if you don't. I can't find anything online so I thought I would ask you!

I've had my male for about 3 months, and ever since I got him he's been having seizers. I went back to the people who I got him from and they said he's never had a seizer when he was with them. Some days he won't have any and somedays he has them every 5 minutes.... Sometimes their violent and sometimes they are not as bad. He almost always looses control of his bowels when having a seizer. I've looked online the signs of them being in pain but he doesn't show any of them. When he's not having a seizer he seems very happy and healthy. He just seems really confused when he comes out of a seizer like he doesn't know what just happened, then he goes back to cleaning himself, sleeping, eating, playing or whatever he was doing prior.

Hello Tyler,

Thank you for your comment. I do not have experience giving echinacea however I have heard good things about it. With rats being so prone to respiratory infections I think anything is worth a try. I would be interested in hearing about your experience with using it.

Good Luck and let us know how everything goes.

hey I thought I would let you guys no something that I just found out and I hope it also works for you, I am not sure if grape fruit is good for rats, but I bought some grape fruit extract, and well, I gave my rat some of it mixed in with some of her favorite baby food, and he contains 100% vitamin D and some other things, but among everything else, it contains "Echinacea root" as in the root from the tea that helps prevent respiratory infections, I want to know if this stuff will actually fully prevent or possibly even "cure" a respiratory infection, and if it will at least prevent it, I will be sure to keep giving her some.

Hello, Kathy again! First off, Parricia, I'm crying still after reading about little Amelia. She obviously had all the love around her that she enjoyed throughout her life and I'm sure she is at peace now. How brave that you did what was best for her.My gd-daughters and I follow everyone's stories and except for space constraints, we would love to comment on them to all our new friends at this great website. Davey had his day at the vet, she did seem amazed at the size comparison between Roscoe and him, although Roscoe is a beefy big buck and expected to be larger. Davey had lost 43g since his last visit, in April when he had an abcess drained. She was at a loss too, for his decline. She found no s/s of infection or disease process and said that if she didn't know his age that she would think he was a stately elder rat in his declining days. I've been giving the nutrical that you recommended, and I do believe he is perking up a bit. She gave 5 days of antibiotic for lack of anything else to do, maybe he has an infection that just isn't manifesting itself. So I just wanted to update you, I don't believe i will have another rat neutered, seems needless now and as Roscoe is so healthy, I just wonder...Good luck to everyone with your babies, and I will post at a later date with my continuing saga.

Patricia, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It warms my heart to think that you were so loving to Amelia throughout her life, even to her final moments. You did everything you could to make her comfortable and ensure she did not suffer.
If only everyone who kept rats was like you. I know things will feel empty without her, but I am sure you have many memories of Amelia to bring a smile to your face.

Thinking of you x

Hello,

I am so sorry to hear about your rat. It sounds like you are doing everything you can to make her comfortable. If she is still with you as I write this you must get her to the vet, even if it means getting a taxi there. I know these things always seem to happen in the middle of the night when there is no vet available.

I will be thinking of you x

Hi Agnes,

It is really important that you never let your rats out at the same time as your cats are in the same room. Make sure the rats have a cat proof cage and that they are completley safe when they come out to play.

Just wanted to let you know that we took our beloved Amelia in to the vet to be put to sleep yesterday. She was starting to have respiratory problems, probably due to the pressure on her lungs from an increasingly large tumor under her armpit and chest. My husband, daughter and I all went along with her. We brought her on her favourite old fuzzy dressing gown and she seemed to perk up and enjoy the car ride and all of the new outdoor smells (though we have taken her out for icecream treats via the McDonald's drive-through on occasion, so she was used to car trips and had good associations with them). The vet administered the sleeping gas as Amelia lay on her familiar dressing gown by putting a see-through cone over her nose. She didn't seem to mind it much, and in fact boggled (usually a sign of contentment)while she was drifting off to sleep, perhaps because the gas relaxed and relieved her. We talked to her softly the whole time and she could see that we were nearby. When she was thoroughly asleep and couldn't feel anything anymore, the vet administered the lethal heart injection, and it took about two or three minutes for her dear little heart to stop beating and for her to pass into peace. All in all, it went very well and she never seemed to panic or feel uncomortable, so all this is to say that in spite of my trepidations, Amelia's euthanasia was about as silk-glove kind and gentle as I could ever have hoped. Have to say though, that her passing leaves a huge void in our bedroom and I know we will miss her dear, funny, adorable, affectionate presence for a long time. She is sealed in our hearts though.

She didn’t seem to mind it much, and in fact boggled (usually a sign of contentment)while she was drifting off to sleep, perhaps because the gas relaxed and relieved her. We talked to her softly the whole time and she could see that we were nearby. When she was thoroughly asleep and couldn’t feel anything anymore, the vet administered the lethal heart injection, and it took about two or three minutes for her dear little heart to stop beating and for her to pass into peace. All in all, it went very well and she never seemed to panic or feel uncomortable, so all this is to say that in spite of my trepidations, Amelia’s euthanasia was about as silk-glove kind and gentle as I could ever have hoped. Have to say though, that her passing leaves a huge void in our bedroom and I know we will miss her dear, funny, adorable, affectionate presence for a long time. She is sealed in our hearts though.

we have a beautiful 3 year old rat whom we've nursed back to health ourselves from multiple lung infections, and even a bad case of mites. in the last few weeks she's hardly come out of her bed except to eat and drink and cuddle.
last night my husband went to clean her cage and i noticed blood around her nose. i read its actually from their eyes, and usually from a respiratory infection. within a few hours her breathings become laboured, she's weezing and squeaking, and raspy. she is so weak she can barely move, and she's stopped eating or drinking. i tried using an eye dropper to give her water, but even that hasn't worked. i took her in the bathroom full of warm steam to try and ease her chest congestion, but it didnt seem to help either. we're bundled her up and held her all day long. she's still holding on, but barely. we're miles away from a vet and dont know how to ease her suffering other than the comfort of love. its breaking my heart.

Hello again,

I checked with my vet (an exotic animals specialist) and they tell me that an odourless gas doesn't seem to be an option (perhaps because of safety issues in human use). However, they can give a small pet an injection to calm it before the gas, which may or may not make them fight the gas part of euthanasia a little less. Alas, we are taking our beloved little Amelia in on Friday with heavy hearts, but knowing that this is the right time to do this for her. Thanks for all of your caring responses.

Hello Charlotte,

I am sorry to hear about your rat passing away. Without seeing the rats it is very hard to diagnose them (and I am not a vet), but it sounds like they could have mycoplasma pulmonis, a common respiratory problem. It can be controlled with antibiotics baytril and doxycycline. Are they the antibiotics Bubbles was on? You should also make sure they are kept warm and if they are a bit wobbly be sure they are in a one level enclosure to avoid injury.,

Try supplementing their food with Nutrical, which is a vitamin filled gel (tastes of caramel) to give them a boost. It is made for cats and dogs, so your little ones will only need a small amount. You should take them to the vets asap, especially your little girl who has injured her leg. The vet may pick up on other symptoms that could indicate a different illness and course of treatment.

Good luck x

Hello again Patricia,

I am unsure of the name of the gas, but there is a gas that has no smell, which your vet can use although they may have to order it in. Hopefully the vet will be able to inform you of the name of the gas,

Best wishes x

Thanx for your prompt response. I have made an appt for Davey, will feel better, like you said, when he is properly assessed. I see no bullying, they both feed together and other than an occasional tussle over a mini oreo cookie, their daily indulgence, they are side by side foraging for their favorite bits. I give them Reggie Rat as well as several lab blocks daily. Also the girls and i enjoy handfeeding daily. They love cream cheese. That's what baffles me so, I see no change in his feeding or their daily routine, he is just so cool to touch and fading away.No nasal or eye disch, lungs seem clear. He does "hiccup" a lot, though. I don't notice Roscoe doing that. Very sad. I am a geriatric RN and see the same in my human patients, that's why I questioned if he really was as young as the chain pet store said. I'll keep you posted. Thanx for the wonderful, informative and entertaining webite!

Thank you for the feedback regarding euthanisia. I guess gas followed by heart injection is still the only humane option for a little rodent, as their veins are too small to inject, and I guess the fact that the gas has an odour is a safer for the vets using it. It just takes a bit of courage to do this for your rattie.
Edith, I've read that old rats often get a kind of hindleg paralysis that originates in their spinal cords and goes hand in hand with aging. In spite of it being sad to watch, they are indomitable little souls and as long as you continue to see the cues that your little guy is still enjoying life, I think we can just carry on with our beloved old-timers until we think their quality of life is too poor. You must have been taking very good care of him, since three and a half is a venerable age for a rat. Good luck with your little fellow.

Hello Maddy,

It is great that you play with your rat every day and give her lots of love and attention. You are right rats are happier with ratty company. They like to snuggle together when they sleep and play and groom each other when you are not around.

It would be great if you could get your rat a companion (another female) and it should be easy to introduce them, but if you are not allowed just try to spend as much time with her as possible. Also ensure she has plenty of toys to play with and warm bedding to snuggle into.

Good Luck

Hello Kathy,

The best idea is to take Davey to the vet. That way they can check his overall health and give him the necessary treatment. Hairless can be prone to getting chilled, which can then lead to respiratory infection so be sure that he has plenty of bedding to snuggle into. You should ensure he is eating and that Roscoe isn't eating all the food. Davey needs some extra calories as the body fat will help keep him warm. Perhaps you could place 2 bowls in separate areas of the cage so that they can both access food easily.
You could try giving Davey a vitamin boost by supplementing his diet with Nutrical, a caramel tasting vitamin gel usually meant for cats and dogs. You only need a pea sized amount to give him a good boost. You can also get vitamin drops for small animals to add to the water.
Is there any bullying going on? Or do the rats seem to get along well?
Be on the lookout for any other signs of ill health such as red porphyrn around the nostrils or a change in breathing or lack of appetite, which may help us diagnose the problem. I would advise taking Davey to the vet as by examining him they should be able to help you.

Good Luck

I have 2 ratties, a tiny little hairless, davey, and his beastly big brother, roscoe. I got them at a pet store, was told that they were 3 or 4 months when i got them, but i wonder if that is the case with davey. he was 8 oz when i got him, last january, he only ever got to 12 oz. roscoe is now 22 oz. my problem is that davey seems so frail of late, still plays and eats, and hasn't lost wt but looks as though he has,his little bones stick out. he also was always so warm to touch, the past several wks he is so cold to touch. i had him neutered, roscoe is not. so I don't know if my little davey is ill or perhaps much older than i know. no s/s of other illness. are the hairless rats just frail and small by nature? my gd-daughters and i love them so much! thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello Denise,

Thank you for your question. You should ensure whichever bedding you choose is not dusty as rats are very prone to respiratory problems. I use shredded newspaper (unprinted pref) as they like to make nests out of it and it doesn't do them any harm. Do not use pine shavings as they can damage your rat's respiratory tract.

Good luck with your new rats.

Hey,
I'm going to be getting some rats soon. So I was wondering what, in your opinion, is the best type of bedding to use?
Thanks

Going back to the first comment regarding chocolate. I'm sure I read somewhere that chocolate can actually benefit a rat's health. Apparently a chemical within the cocoa acts as a bronchodilator, so good in moderation for rats with upper respiratory probs which we all know they are prone to.

Hello Patricia,

Thank you for your comment. I am sorry to hear your little one is ill. Ginger, one of my first ratty friends suffered with a mammary tumour and like your rat she did very well until eventually it started to effect her quality of life.

Euthanasia is always a hard thing to deal with, but it is lovely that you are making the effort to ensure Amelia will not suffer. I am so annoyed at myself because I can't remember the name of the gas my vet uses, but it is the same one used to put them to sleep before surgery. It does not seem to cause any suffering and makes them unable to feel the needle.

Ask your vet for the most humane way to put your little girl to sleep, as they should be able to advise you which gas your pet won't be able to feel.

Best wishes

Hello Edith,

Thank you for your lovely comment. I am glad that you have found the tips useful. I wish our ratties lived longer. It is so sad when they pass away, but at least we know we have given them the best life possible.

3 - 3.5 years is a great age for your rat. You should be proud.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much! My rat is about 3 and a half years old, and his lgs have started to drag slightly and he walks differently and i wasn't at all sure what was going on, but this has reassured me that it is just his old age! I wish his legs weren't dragging, but it doesn't stop him being cheeky and running off to explore everywhere. I will definitely be using these tops to help him out! Thank you!

I just stumbled upon this and i really appreciate it! The way you were writing about rats, i.e when you mentioned how hard it was to see 'our little darlings poorly' is exactly how i would talk about them! They are amazing animals and get a bad reputation, when really they make the most wonderful pets!
I have one rat currently, and he is my 6th as i always got them in groups of two. His name is Fred (his late brother was George!)
Unfortunately i think it is too late for me to try and extend the life of my current ratty, although he is about 3/3 and a half years old, which is getting close! However, i wish i had known this when i first got my rats, as my current rat's brother died a while ago as he got two internal tumours. It was so so so awful watching him be ill, and my healthy rat trying to comfort him, but eventually his heart gave out and he died in my arms...very sad i know, haha! Even if it is too late for the rats i have had in the past i will DEFINITELY be noting this information down for rats i will have in the future, Thanks a lot!!

Hello,

We have a dearly loved elderly rat, Amelia, who has two increasingly huge mammary tumors that are becoming hard for her to manage. Lately, off and on her breathing is a little puffy and her hind legs are not strong anymore (muscle atrophy? related to the tumors?), so we now have to pick her up and move her around her pen to give her a change of scenery. Yet she seems still to derive quite a bit of enjoyment out of her life. She is still alert, affectionate and bright-looking, she still enjoys her baths and blowdrys and she still loves lying on a fuzzy blanket on our laps as we work or watch TV. She still boggles her contentment and looks up when she hears my voice. We are all going to be asbsolutely heartbroken when she dies (we lost her cagemate last year, an adorable Dumbo rat, Lotte, who battled mycoplasm for most of her life. My husband's allergies prohibited us from bringing home a new friend for Amelia, so we've all tried to fill in). My question is, is there a more humane way to euthanize an ailing rat than what our vet uses, which is to gas it to sleep and then do a lethal heart injection? Our guinea pigs hated the smell of the gas, and sick and all as they were, they fought it hard even though they were very sick and weak by the time they were put to sleep. Amelia is disabled and beginning to ail now. None of us want her to get to the true suffering stage, but the thoughts of taking this mentally alert, intelligent, gentle, adorable, trusting and dearly loved family member in to be held in the gas is quite heartbreaking. Is there no nicer or kinder way to put a little rodent to sleep?
Thank you for any input.

Hi Karissa,

Yes rats can eat cucumber. It is good to offer them a wide variety of fruit and veg to make sure they get lots of vitamins.

I give my boys the bones when we've had chops for dinner. They love gnawing on them, tasty and fun!! I'm sure they are also good for keeping their teeth down too. I just make sure I remove the bones after a couple of hours as not to go off (esp in the summer).

When I introduced my boys Jason and Freddy I gave them both a bath with ferret shampoo (smells quite strong to cover a ferret's smell!), put towels in a neutral area and left them to it. I kept an eye in case I needed to break up a big fight, but they were good. A couple of squabbles and power grooms, but they soon loved to cuddle up together

Hello Abby,

It sounds like you take good care of your rat, but it is always best to have at least 2 rats. That way they can snuggle together as they sleep and play with each other when you are not around. See whether you can find her a female companion.

Hi Kassi,

My rats love Weetbix cereal so that is the main thing I use for a reward. You should try out different things and see what your rats love most.

Good Luck

Hello Hayley,

Thank you for your comment. Your rats Jason and Freddy sound adorable. How brilliant that they live a free range lifestyle. I am sure you will be an inspriation to other rat carers. It just shows that by taking extra care you can provide your rats with the most wonderful life. Sorry to hear about Jason's condition, but I am sure he still has a high quality of life with you.

I have 2 rats Jason and Freddy. We've had Jason for a long time now and he is very old. We never had to have him caged as from the day we got him we had him in/on a towel on the sofa and he would always kind of hang around there. He would wander a little, but never left the sofa or bed. He also would only toilet on his towel, which I would change daily. We then got Freddy and he learnt Jason's behaviour. They are such good boys and love their free range lifestyle always with us on the sofa when we are at home and then snuggle with us at night.
Unfortunately we are now having to put Jason in a cage at night time as he is pretty much blind, deaf and has paralysis of his hind quarters. For some reason Freddy is getting territorial in the bedroom and is attacking the poor old man so he's safer and happier in his cage at night, but still sits on the sofa with us in the daytime.
You do have to make sure their area is safe, but with observation and just spending lots of time with them, they can have a great free range life. I have found this is easier with males as they are a little less active than females and do not chew/nest as much either.

I am sorry to hear Susan is not very well. The best thing to do would be to take her to the vet asap. Being wobbly can be a symptom of an inner ear infection which would need to be treated with antibiotics immediately. My little rat Pea displays similar symptoms when she is dealing with a respiratory infection, which can also be checked by the vet.

You should change to a single level cage to prevent injury from falling over. It sounds like you are doing a great job at nursing Susan and I know you care for her very much, so taking her to the vet will help put your mind at ease and hopefully will bring her relief too.

Good Luck

Hello Matthew,

You should definitely get a male or you will end up with a lot of babies and won't know what to do with them. 2 male rats can get along well. Just spend a little time when introducing them to make sure they don't fight. We have some tips on this here: http://www.ratsratsrats.com/102/introducing-rats/

Hi Sammy,

First things first think very carefully before you breed your rats. Would you be able to find loving homes for all of the babies? You should never just give them away to a pet shop as they may go to unsuitable homes or be used as snake food.

If you do decide to breed please do your research first. You need to make sure you set up the right environment for the doe with lots of nesting material. If a baby is born deformed, ill or dead the mother may eat the baby. Otherwise there shouldn't be problems.

Before breeding ensure both parents and very healthy and they won't be passing on any undesired traits to the babies. Please read as much as you can and think carefully before breeding.

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for your comment. Yes rats can be neutered. It is important to use a vet that is knowledgable and compassionate to rats. If your rats are aggressive and you have tried other methods or if you may be keeping females with males you may consider desexing.

hello. my rat susan is just about 2.5years old and lately she has been showing rapid signs of aging. i have a multilevel cage which she shares with two other little girls, and although i have lowered the levels significantly, she still tends to fall every so often. i've also noticed she has a tremendous amount of trouble holding her food, because her hands cross like an X, making her unable to grab and hold onto hard foods. it gets stuck on her face and on her neck. i started hand feeding her and feeding her baby foods, but she's a mess and walks through the plate of mush, getting the food everywhere. i clean her daily and make sure she eats multiple times a day.

other than that, she's still got spunk! its not that she's sleeping in a corner all day- she's active, but she's super wobbly, falls over a lot, and can't handle food, which makes me worry that she's hungry when i'm not there to feed her.

i'm really worried about her. i did a lot of research, but i can't understand the crossed hands, preventing her to eat. i read a lot about hind leg deterioration, but it seems the deterioration is happening in the front legs.

i'm really sad. i love her so much, and although i know she's getting older, and i know her time may be limited, i still want her to be comfortable while she's still here.

do you have any ideas on why her hands are crossing, preventing her to eat on her own? i want my baby to be able to eat when i'm not there.

thank you

when washing your pet rat, make sure you prase him/her so they know its ok... and a big one... DO NOT LET YOUR RATS EARS GET WET!! when rats get water in their ears it can throw off their balance... its really sad when that happens because you have to keep them seperated and depending on how bad it is, you may need to put them down T_T

Hello Sophie,

You can tame your rats with love, kindness and patience. If they are very nervous start by leaving the cage door open and sitting down on the floor next to it. Have some treats on your lap and let the rats come to you. Pick them up to put them back inside at the end of their free range time and they will begin to associate you with safety.

Spend at least an hour with them every day and they will soon come around,

Good Luck

You can buy a clicker for under $5. You can also get one for free by using the top of a jam jar, which has a little popper on top. It makes a similar noise. Well done for doing your research and planning before you adopt your new rats.

Hi Kathy,

Here is a mite treatment for small animals: Click here

A vet will be able to provide a more effective treatment, so you may want to make an appointment for Munchie,

Good Luck

Hi there,
My rattie, Munchie, has been itching alot. I cut back on the dog biscuts I give him to once a week and now I am starting to cut back on the very small pieces of cheese I give him also (was once a day, now every other day). I looked in the fur on and off for many days and I do not see any parasites. The skin looks good too. Just today, though, I notice one tiny reddish skin irritation, or scab. Your article on skin problems states: "You can get anti-mite lotion in the pet shop, the vets or at our Rat Store." I wanted to try this just in case there are mites. I went in your rat store and could not find the lotion you mentioned. (In fact, you had some items there for dogs - ?) Other than the itching, he seems healthy enough (I hope). I hope you can help.
Sincerely,
Kathy

Hello Anna,

I am so sorry to hear about Rat. You did everything you could for him and gave him all the love and care in the world. It is heart breaking that he has passed away, especially as you couldn't be there, but you must remember what a good life you gave him and that your mother was giving him excellent care whilst you were away. My little rat Summer passed away when I was in the UK last year and I felt awful. I was sad and guilty for not being there, but it is important to focus on good memories. What a lucky little rat Rat was to live his life with you so happily.

Give yourself time to grieve Rat and don't let others tell you that it is wrong to be upset over your loss. To them he may be 'just a rat', but to you he was a friend.

Thinking of you

Rat died. He went at home, at least. I was away, and my mother was taking good care of him. I just thought it would be okay, because he was doing so well and it was only 15 days. While I was studying in Germany, though, he passed. I feel terrible. I don't know if I should have gone. I just hope he didn't think I abandoned him. I think he knew I was coming back, but it was just his time. I don't know, I'm heartbroken. He was my friend, and it's just so different without him. I think it's hard for everyone to understand why I'm so upset over "just a rat." I just don't know what to do without him.
Thank you again for all of the time and advice for us through all of this.

Well, I finally made a cage, but it's not exactly how I thought it would turn out. But it's pretty awesome. The basic idea of the cage is found at www.dapper.com.au/cagebuild.htm But... the cage I built doesn't look much like the cage on the website. I built the cage with an open top, and used some wire as a lid, with some books to weigh it down. That was used as a way to get to the rats, cause we didn't have a door frame. Anyway, because the top was built open, we were able to add my other cage on top, cause it's the same width.

Hi Amanda,

Female rats go into heat at about 6 weeks old and will then be in heat every 5 days or so. I love both male and female rats, so cannot really advise you which is best.

Hi Krystal,

It sounds like your little rat may have been mistreated before you got him. It will take a lot of patience and love, but he will trust you in the end. Sit quietly with him and let him come to you. Have some treats on your lap to encourage him. Speak softly to him and always handle him gently. Pick him up to place him back in his cage and he will begin to connect your hands with safety.

Good Luck

Hi Tyler,

It sounds like she is very nervous. Perhaps she was mistreated before you got her. Spend as much time with her as you can. Sit quietly on the floor with the cage door open and some treats on your lap. Do something quiet like read a book and if you do this she will gradually begin to trust you and come to you. Pick her up to put her back in the cage so she begins to think of the comfort of her house when you pick her up.

Good Luck

Hi Olivia,

Only give your rat a bath if they have got really messy. Usually they will groom themselves and the natural oils in their coat keep them healthy. You can get pet shampoo from most pet shops.

Are you adopting a pregnant rat? Usually you the Mum rat will take care of the babies, but if not you can hand raise them. Check out this article for advice. http://www.ratsratsrats.com/116/hand-raising-baby-rats/

Hi Katie,

You should take your rat to the vet to be sure there is nothing wrong. It is hard for me to tell, but it could be an inner ear infection, which needs to be treated with antibiotics. A good vet can tell you for sure.

Hi,

I have a hairless rat named Mazie and i have beeen using her favorite treats, sunflower seeds, to teach her to come to her name. I have done about 1 or 2 short sessions with her and she seems to want to climb under things and make mischeif and then i end up having to get up and go get her because she doesnt respond to me calling her name. what should i do to make her more interested in learning her name rather than getting into trouble?

Hi i was wondering if i could ask your advise. Last week I adopted 2 ten month old rats. they are very friendly happy rats but one has a weeping eye. I have some ointment for it so am optimistic it will get better, my worry is that she is very clumsy! She has poor balance and isn't very speedy when out of the cage. Do you think she could just be a lazy clumsy rat or could her medical problems be worse than expected.
Any comments would be appreciated. I've had rats before but never experienced a clumsy one before!
Thanks
Katie

Funny rat story( it's too silly to keep to myself.): When I cleaned the cage the other day, I used shredded paper towels for bedding, cause it's snuggly and soft. Also, I put a small rock on their light-weight igloo, because they always turn it over. Well... when I woke up this morning, I found that the igloo, instead of being in the corner, were it was, it was right in the middle of the floor! And... Lulu had taken nearly half of the bedding up to the top, were she usually snuggles with Ella! So the bottom floor had barely any bedding- and Lulu was STILL bringing bedding up top!
